Chimney fires occur are a common fire response in the canyons. Improper construction of fires built too hot, too cold, and wood filled with pitch, such as pine are some of the causes. Starting a fire in the fireplace with smaller material and building the fire with progressively larger wood will help the stack vent the smoke correctly, with less creosote build up. Creosote building up can catch fire and cause a blast of fire out the chimney cap. Such fires can ignite roofs, structural members and leaves and needles on the roof. The high intensity fire often results in damage to the flue or chimney lining. Professional inspection and cleaning of the flue will reduce the chance of a chimney fire.
